Here we goooooooo!

With summer now over (I know, I know, sorry!) I figured a summer inspired sunset paint-along seemed appropriate.

You may need to pause a couple times, but you should be able to complete this in 30-45 minutes.

Basic materials needed:
  • 8x10 canvas or other painting surface
  • some brushes (flat and filbert if you've got them)
  • acrylic paint (red, blue, yellow, white & black)

For a more detailed material list, click here.

Drop any questions, comments, suggestions in the comments :)

ENJOY!

You don't need anything fancy to be able to follow along with these paint-alongs. I'm a big advocate of using what you have, so as long as you've got some clean brushes, acrylic paint (the primaries: red, blue, yellow, black and white) and canvas, you'll be able to follow along no problem.

That said, if you're interested in pursuing painting as a hobby (which you totally should, because it's awesome!), here's all you need to get started:

ACRYLIC PAINT

In terms of brands, I'm a die-hard Golden fan, but Liquitex and  Tri-Art are great choices as well.
When it comes to specific pigments, these are the colours I use. And honestly, it's all you need:
  • Ultramarine Blue
  • Phthalo Blue (Green Shade)
  • Quinacridone Magenta
  • Pyrrole Red Light
  • Hansa Yellow Opaque
  • Diarylide Yellow
  • Titanium White
  • Carbon Black

PALETTE OPTIONS

  • Disposable palette paper (convenient, but a tad wasteful)
  • Reusable palette (make sure you clean promptly after each use. Speaking from experience)
  • Masterson Sta-wet palette (the best thing ever!)
    • If you're going to be painting with acrylics a lot, invest in one of these. The sta-wet palette keeps acrylics workable for days. It's the best thing I've ever purchased for myself.
    • You can also find DIY instructions for this kind of palette on YouTube

PAINTING SURFACE

Gallery wrapped canvases seem to be the most popular options for painting surfaces. I've learned a lot about painting surfaces and may do a separate video on this topic. For now, I'd suggest gallery wrapped canvas or canvas boards.

BRUSHES

I don't place a lot of importance on brushes in my own work. Quality of paint has always been the bigger focus. So I don't have very strong recommendations here. I'd suggest getting a variety of shapes and sizes. The brushes I turn to most frequently (for landscape painting) are:
  • Flat (large, mid-size and small)
  • Filbert (small)
  • Round (mid-size)
  • Pointed Round (small)
